CHOOSING INDEPENDENCE PROJECT, DONCASTER and ROTHERHAM

SYCIL is very excited to announce the start of our new Choosing Independence Project in April 2010. Thanks to a Big Lottery Fund grant of £323,461. Choosing Independence will run initially for three years, and will work with groups of Disabled People or with individuals to give information, support and advice about the Personalisation Process. Personalisation is a new way of funding social care that gives Disabled people real choice and control over the assistance and services they need to be able to live independently.
SYCIL’s mission statement is "To enable disabled people to secure independent, inclusive living and establish their equal and effective participation in daily life" so naturally, we are very excited about Personalisation. However we recognise that as well as giving increased choice and control, it will also raise new issues, challenges and questions.
For example:
- What exactly is Personalisation?
- Direct Payments / Individual Budgets / Self Directed Care – this is all confusing - what are all these and what is the difference between them?
- How do I find out about Personalisation in the first place?
- Who will help me through the assessment process?
- I want to employ a personal assistant - but who will help me with recruitment?
- How will I manage my own budget and pay my staff?
- What are my responsibilities if I employ a personal assistant?
- What happens if something goes wrong?
- Is there someone I can learn from who has been through the same process?
- What other help and assistance is out there for me?
Choosing Independence will help with all these questions, as well as provide information and training sessions and one to one assistance.
The Lottery funding we have secured will enable us to provide a dedicated team of trained staff and volunteers to help Disabled People, families and friends with all aspects of Personalisation.
The Choosing Independence Project will work throughout Doncaster and Rotherham, complimenting the other services we provide in both areas.
We envisage that the Choosing Independence team will be in place from mid April 2010, but for more information in the meantime, please contact Jo Ritson (Training and Volunteer Co-ordinator) on 01302 892958 / 01709 373658 or email jo.r@sycil.org
